The Chalk Emerald Ring is one of the largest Colombian emerald weighing 37.82 carats (7.56 grams) set in a ring surrounded by diamonds.
Origin of the NameIt originally weighed 38.40 carats (7.68 g), but was re-cut and set in a ring, where it is surrounded by sixty pear-shaped diamonds (totaling 15 carats (3.0 grams), by the famous Harry Winston Inc. Mr. O. Roy Chalk purchased the emerald ring from Harry Winston and gifted it to his wife, who wore the stunning emerald ring for a state dinner at the White House, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. But, during the party Mrs. Claire Chalk observed that Her Excellency the Queen, was wearing a less attractive emerald ring, and decided to turn her ring around on her finger, so as not to upstage the queen. The ring was donated to the museum by Mr. and Mrs. O. Roy Chalk in 1972 and hence it was named after them. The ring is currently housed in the National Gem and Mineral Collection at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in the United States.
Characteristics of the Stone
The Chalk Emerald is a 37.82-carat, square emerald-cut, deep bluish-green emerald of Colombian origin, with a good transparency. Like all natural emeralds the Chalk Emerald contain inclusions. According to legend, it was once the centerpiece of an emerald and diamond necklace belonging to a maharani of India.
